The grand, sprawling mansion itself becomes the most potent antagonist in Michael and David Farrel, whose 2018 supernatural horror "Winchester" attempts to build a chilling cathedral out of historical obsession and profound grief. This is less a traditional haunted house romp and more a protracted, expensive séance, draped in velvet and suffocated by silence.
"Winchester" plunges us into the labyrinthine world of Sarah Winchester (Helen Mirren), the eccentric heiress to the Winchester Repeating Arms fortune, who believes she is cursed by the vengeful spirits of every person killed by her company’s rifles. To appease these spectral hordes, she embarks on a ceaseless, nonsensical construction project in 1920s San Francisco, an architectural fever dream designed to confuse the dead. The film functions as a Gothic melodrama centered on inherited trauma, manifesting physically as the house’s endless corridors and sealed-off rooms.
Technically, the film benefits immensely from its production design. The mise-en-scène is, predictably, the star; the sheer, illogical scale of the Winchester Mystery House—with its staircases leading to nowhere and doors opening onto thin air—provides an instant, unsettling atmosphere. Helen Mirren anchors the film with a performance that balances aristocratic hauteur with brittle madness; she plays Sarah not as a caricature, but as a woman genuinely besieged by forces she cannot control. However, the cinematography, while glossy, often opts for predictable jump-scare lighting rather than sustained dread, leaving the visual language feeling somewhat conventional despite the unconventional subject matter. The screenplay struggles most with dialogue, often resorting to exposition-heavy lines that spell out the spiritual stakes rather than allowing the architecture to whisper them.
The narrative pacing is deliberately slow, mirroring the endless, tedious work Sarah undertakes. This measured approach occasionally serves the mood, but often feels like padding, particularly once skeptical psychiatrist Dr. Eric Price (Jason Clarke) is introduced to provide a necessary, albeit slightly cliché, grounding force. While the thematic core—the burden of guilt and the impossibility of escaping the historical violence one profits from—is rich, the film rarely digs deep enough, preferring to keep its ghosts metaphorically literal. The emotional impact is muted because the connection between Sarah’s personal grief and the mass spiritual retribution remains somewhat abstract.
What "Winchester" executes brilliantly is the unsettling realization that the house is a prison built by its owner. The concept of a structure actively defying logic is inherently frightening. Conversely, the film falters by committing too heavily to traditional horror beats, including unnecessary and poorly integrated jump scares that puncture the slow-burn tension. It tries to be both a serious exploration of Victorian spiritualism and a mainstream studio horror flick, resulting in a stylistic schizophrenia that leaves both intentions feeling partially realized. It fits within the genre as a high-budget, period-piece ghost story, albeit one that lacks the visceral punch of its better contemporaries.
